Historic Rockford

How Rockford got its name

A rocky crossing over Rock Creek gave the town a name that still connects it to the landscape.

The rocky ford

The Town of Rockford’s account traces the name to a shallow, rocky crossing on Rock Creek used by Native people. HistoryLink similarly describes an Indigenous name translated approximately as “Rocky Ford.” Over time, the crossing’s name became the community’s name: Rockford.

Reading a landscape

A ford is a place where water can be crossed. Before bridges and modern roads, such crossings helped shape routes of travel. Rock Creek therefore belongs at the center of an account of the town, not simply as a feature on a map.

A story to handle with care

These English-language sources do not establish the precise original-language wording. This article does not invent one. The area’s Indigenous history deserves interpretation informed by Spokane voices and sources, rather than a translation being treated as the whole story.
